Residency Overview

The 2012-2013 residency will begin on Monday, June 24th, 2013, and will end on Friday, June 20nd, 2013.

Orientation will begin on Monday, June 24th 2013 and will continue for the next five weeks. During this time residents will learn computerized order entry processes, dispensing practices, sterile intravenous compounding, basic pharmacy-focused clinical record keeping, and basic pharmacy inventory management. Additionally, residents will receive training in CPR, BLS and will go though an orientation to the residency learning system (RLS).

Residency Learning Experiences

Required
  • Sterile Intravenous Compounding/Nutrition (five weeks in length)
  • Internal Medicine (five weeks in length)
  • Drug Information/Medication Safety/ Medication Use (five weeks in length)
  • Critical Care (5 weeks in length)
  • Administration/Practice Management (five weeks in length)
  • Information Systems (three weeks in length)
  • Disease Management and Wellness (longitudinal)
Electives*
  • Cardiology (five weeks in length)
  • Emergency Medicine (five weeks in length)
  • Informatics (variable lengths)
  • Oncology/Palliative Care (five weeks in length)
  • Orthopedic/Spine/Post-Operative Care (five weeks in length)

*Certain electives may be coordinated with the University of Virginia Health System based upon resident need and availability.

Other

Residents will be required to attend the ASHP Annual Midyear Clinical Meeting and will attend and present their residency projects at the Eastern States Residency Conference.

Research

Residents will be required to complete one major project and several short-term projects throughout the course of the residency year.

Service Component

The service component will be fulfilled on weekends and provides necessary training to meet residency standard competencies. Residents will be assigned to work every other weekend in the inpatient pharmacy throughout the year.

Teaching Component

Throughout the residency year, residents will have the opportunity to provide education in the form of nursing inservices, medical staff presentations, journal club presentations, and continuing education pharmacy programs for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Other teaching opportunities in which residents can participate may become available throughout the year.
