Nursing Philosophy

Martha Jefferson’s professional practice model includes:

  • Patient and family centered care, actualized through our commitment to Planetree philosophies and the Relationship Based Care model
  • A culture of safety and accountability
  • Shared decision making and collaborative teamwork
  • A commitment to professional development and lifelong learning
  • A dedication to evidence-based practice and a responsibility for building on nursing science through new knowledge and innovation
  • Data collection, benchmarking and exemplary performance in the achievement of quality outcomes

In 2009, our Nursing Strategic plan was revised to incorporate the language of the 2008 Magnet® model. Patient and Family Centered Care, actualized through our Model of Care and our commitment to Planetree philosophies, is the foundation for our nursing Practice. Our Shared Governance Structure is made up of unit-based councils and four hospital-wide Councils: Leadership, Practice, Work Design, and Education and Professional Development. These councils incorporate core Magnet model components, including Transformational Leadership, Structural Empowerment, Exemplary Professional Practice, and New Knowledge, Improvements, and Innovations. Empirical Quality Outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of our structure and processes.
