Nursing at Martha Jefferson Hospital

For over a century, Martha Jefferson has been an active force in improving the health of our community. We are always changing and evolving to assess needs and redefine expectations. We consistently reach out to the undeserved. We are always piloting new models of care and service delivery.

Our strategic plan includes a goal of developing our nursing service to promote clinical excellence and innovations in the delivery of patient care. Quality nursing is one of the cornerstones on which Martha Jefferson's reputation has been built.

Some highlights of our nursing program include the following accomplishments:

  • Martha Jefferson has been accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center since 2006 as the first independent community hospital in the Commonwealth of Virginia to attain Magnet status, joining five percent of hospitals nationwide.
  • Our nurses enjoy a higher level of collaboration with their physician colleagues than the national mean for hospitals of comparable bed size, as demonstrated by October 2008 survey results from The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) Nurse Satisfaction Survey.
  • Over 27 percent of our nurses are certified in a specialty area by a national certifying body. Our pediatric and ICU staff has the highest level of certification at close to 50 percent.
