About Our Chaplains

Grace Cangialosi, MA, M DIV

Chaplain at Martha Jefferson Hospital since 2006, Grace provides spiritual care and counseling throughout the hospital for patients and families. She works primarily in orthopedics and cardiology and throughout the hospital as needed.

Suzanne Hilton Smith, MCM

Chaplain at Martha Jefferson Hospital since 1993, Suzanne Hilton Smith provides care throughout the hospital and in the outpatient cancer center. She provides counseling services and spiritual support for oncology and is chaplain for the palliative care team.

Our clinically trained Chaplains:

  • Hold master's degrees from accredited seminaries
  • Are endorsed by particular faith traditions or denominations
  • Have trained as residents at tertiary care teaching hospitals with a minimum of 1600 hours of direct clinical care and supervision
  • Are members of the Virginia Chaplains Association, the Association of Professional Chaplains and/or the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
  • Are committed to continuing education to maintain high standards of practice
  • Are both willing and trained to care for people of all religious traditions or none in a compassionate and supportive way

The chaplain's role is:

  • To offer a supportive presence and a listening ear
  • To provide comfort in difficult times
  • To improve communication and understanding
  • To help with ethical and moral decision making
  • To advocate for the goals and values of patients
  • To provide religious support, prayers, and rituals from the patient's faith tradition
  • To bring a sacred presence to times of birth, death, or transition
  • To help staff understand and respond to cultural and religious differences among our patients
