The data center in the new Martha Jefferson Hospital is one room that will never be seen by patients, and one that only a few employees will ever access. It’s tucked away in the basement, but behind the closed doors many technologies are being put to the test to make sure you receive quality, efficient care.

Preparing to move patients from one hospital to a brand new facility takes planning and practice. More than a year before Martha Jefferson will actually move, there’s a team of people already working on a detailed list of things that need to take place, from coordinating elevator and traffic patterns, to making sure patient’s personal belongings are safe and make it to the right place, in order to make sure things go smooth on the big day.

Lots of planning has to take place before moving into a new hospital. Thousands of different products, supplies and pieces of equipment have to be ordered, delivered and installed. CBS19′s Sara Ross got a chance to interview Sheila O’Donnell, the woman in charge of that task at Martha Jefferson. Martha Jefferson Hospital is using special ledite blocks in the construction of the cancer center at the new hospital on Pantops Mountain. The blocks are created with a mix of concrete and heavy metal to keep radiation from getting where it shouldn’t be and also serves as a space saver.

When Martha Jefferson makes its move to its new facility on Pantops Mountain it’s going to make more people able to access medical care in one place. With medical offices, the Martha Jefferson Outpatient Care Center and the new hospital all on the same campus at Peter Jefferson Place, it will make healthcare options more convenient for patients.
