Martha Jefferson Honored with Magnet Re-Designation

July 21, 2011

Martha Jefferson Hospital received top honors Thursday as the hospital was re-designated as a Magnet hospital by the American American Nurses Credentialing Center.  Members of the nursing team, administration and community members gathered together to hear the news.

“For patients, it can be an assurance that when they come to Martha Jefferson they’re going to get the very best care that’s out there,” said Chief Nursing Executive, Amy Black.

Dr. Pat Reid Ponte D.N.Sc., RN, FAAN, Chairperson of the Commission on Magnet Recognition Program® and Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute delivered the news over the phone.  They noted that Martha Jefferson excelled in the dissemintation of evidence based practice and nursing research, community outreach, and innovations in the use of technology and facility design.

“I am thankful for the support of our entire hospital team for making such an achievement possible.  When Magnet was on-site back in May, the surveryors met with 29 teams and over 290 people from many disciplines. The collegial relationships that exist at Martha Jefferson and the admiration that the community has for the work of Martha Jefferson were quite apparent to the surveyors,” said Black.

Martha Jefferson was first designated as a Magnet facility in 2006.  Every four years hospitals must re-apply for the designation.  Only approximately 5% of hospitals in the world are Magnet facilities.
