| Surgery
for Breast Cancer Treatment Surgery to remove as
much of the cancer as possible is the primary treatment for breast cancer. Modified or
simple mastectomy are used more often than radical mastectomy (complete removal of the
breast tissue and muscle). Generally, surgery also includes removal of some or all of the
regional lymph nodes.
What are some of the types of breast cancer surgery?
Breast conservation (tissue-sparing) surgery:
- lumpectomy - removal only of cancerous tissues and a portion of normal tissue.
- partial (segmental) mastectomy - removal of one-quarter or more of the breast, and
possibly the lymph nodes under the arm.
Mastectomy:
- simple or total mastectomy - removal of the entire breast, but no lymph nodes from under
arm nor muscle tissue from under the breast.
- modified radical mastectomy - removal of the entire breast and lymph nodes under the
arm.
- radical mastectomy - removal of entire breast, lymph nodes, and the chest wall muscles
under the breast.
Reconstructive or breast implant surgery: surgery to restore a breast mound
after mastectomy.
