At the Maternity Care Center, you can deliver your baby in a warm and caring atmosphere, with all the comforts of home and latest technology to keep you and your baby safe.
Our nurses have received extensive training and are highly experienced in maternity care. They are all cross-trained, which means you can have the same nurse through labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum recovery. This continuity of care allows you and your family to get to know your nurses, as well as your new baby, which can make your stay at Martha Jefferson feel a little more like home. We also have a one-to-one ratio during active labor, so that your nurse can stay by your side throughout the most difficult time of your labor.
Not only are our nurses friendly and experienced, but they genuinely love their work! To our nurses, each and every birth is unique, and we are honored to be a part of this miracle of life.

Welcome to the Maternity Care Center at Martha Jefferson Hospital! We are excited about helping you to have the experience that you want during this amazing and miraculous time. After visiting other maternity centers and helping countless women give birth we designed our Center specifically to fulfill your needs, with:
Approximately two hours after birth, you and your baby will be moved to the Mother/Baby wing for postpartum recovery. These rooms are located in the Maternity Care Unit, so you are still close to the nursery and under the watchful eye of the maternity nurses. In fact, you will probably continue to have the same nurse that helped you give birth, because we believe in the importance of continuity of care. These rooms are all private, with a sleep sofa for your partner or other visitors.
We strongly encourage the significant other to remain with the mother at all times to provide comfort and support, so we have furnished each room with a second bed or pull out sofa. For grandparents, the first visit can be at any time, day or night. The baby's siblings are allowed in the Maternity Care Center. Newborn babies have very vulnerable immune systems, so we want to minimize the health risks that the baby comes in contact with.
We tend to encourage rooming-in, because this time immediately after birth is a critical time for mother/baby bonding. However, we also offer respite nursery care. If you need a break or extra rest, the maternity nurses will gladly watch over your baby in the nursery until it is time for feeding. Once you are ready to room-in again, we will bring your baby right back to you.
More than 80 percent of new mothers at Martha Jefferson Hospital breastfeed their babies. Lactation Consultants are available to new mothers everyday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our Lactation Consultants also provide one-on-one outpatient lactation consults to assist you and your baby with successful breastfeeding after you've gone home. If you have questions or need assistance, call our Lactation Consultant line at (434) 654-8440.
For breastfeeding supplies, visit The Lactation Corner. This boutique offers an array of items for breastfeeding moms and their babies, including breast pumps for rent or sale, breastfeeding bras, maternity clothes, baby clothes, books and more.
After a vaginal birth, most women will stay with us for two nights; and for a Cesarean birth, the average is three nights. At the doctor's discretion, some women leave sooner and some stay longer.
Checkout time from Martha Jefferson Hospital is 11 a.m. on the day of discharge. On the morning of discharge, we offer a complimentary brunch to the mother and her significant other. At this time, you will also receive important information on caring for your baby, yourself, bonding, safety, and community resources for new parents. You will also have a final consultation to give instructions on proper care for the mother and to answer any questions before our valet service brings your car to you.
