The Digestive Care Center relies on several disciplines and state-of-the-art capabilities to evaluate and treat gastrointestinal and motility disorders, liver disease, and pancreatic and biliary duct disorders. Some of these procedures and techniques are highlighted below.
GI endoscopy
| |
screening endoscopy |
| |
hemostasis: banding, sclerotherapy, bicap, thermal injection therapy, argon plasma coagulation, endoclip |
| |
balloon dilation |
| |
steroid injection for intractable benign esophageal stenosis |
| |
percutaneous gastrostomy |
| |
botulinum toxin for achalasia |
| |
stent placement for malignant stricture |
M2A Capsule Endoscopy
Colonoscopy
colon cancer screening and polyp removal
hemostasis: thermal and injection therapy, argon plasma coagulation
hemorrhoid banding
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
EUS is a technique combining optical endoscopy with ultrasound imaging and capability for ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration. As such, the gastroenterologist is able to image tissue within and outside the intestinal wall. EUS is now the standard of care in staging such malignancies as esophageal and rectal carcinoma. It is also an extremely useful adjunct in evaluating and biopsying mediastinal adenopathy, pancreaticobiliary lesions and in staging many other cancers. Other uses are to evaluate the anal sphincter in patients with fecal incontinence and to provide pain control via celiac axis neurolysis.
Motility studies
esophageal impedence manometry
esophageal transit studies
24-hour pH monitoring
biofeedback for fecal incontinence
gastric emptying studies
colonic transit studies
anorectal manometry
Liver Studies
radiological evaluation and treatment of portal hypertension
angiography, arterial and CT portography
percutaneous, transvenous and laparoscopic liver biopsy
diagnostic and therapeutic paracentesis
Pancreatic and biliary procedures
ERCP (visualization of the biliary and pancreatic ducts)
MRCP (magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography)
sphincterotomy and duct stenting
stone extraction from biliary and pancreatic ducts
How to Refer
Patients can be referred directly to one of our physicians. For Endoscopic Ultrasound, patients should be referred to Dr. Cindy Yoshida.
Location
Most procedures are performed in Martha Jefferson Hospital's state-of-the-art endoscopy center, located in the Cardwell Center at 459 Locust Avenue. Patients should enter through the Cardwell Entrance, where a registration staff member will greet them. Parking is free and valet parking is available
