The Grinder
The Grinder is the type of player known for his checking ability and work ethic. The Grinder's the guy who works long, crazy hours with little fanfare. He is eager to learn and often takes extra call to get more admissions or more cases. The Grinder works hard in the emergency room, the laboratory, staff meetings and other places no other doctors want to go. The Grinder's willing to sacrifice his body. Deflecting other people's attitudes about your abilities isn't pretty, but then again, neither is the name "Grinder." The Grinder always sticks up for his fellow physicians. Why? Because they're colleagues. And the other people aren't.

The Playmaker
The Playmaker makes all of us look good. The Playmaker is almost as unselfish as the Grinder, but sees the ice differently. The Playmaker often gives his time more to administrative duties than hands-on clinical work - like a section chief or a research professor. The Playmaker is not the Surgeon General, but he's not a money-hungry court-room "expert witness" either. The Playmaker quietly gets points for excellent delegative, operative or clinical judgment - because in medicine, as in hockey, an assist can be more beautiful than a goal.

The Superstar
Simply put, the Superstar can do things no one else can. The Superstar may have many origins: a prestigious institution or perhaps accelerated through the ranks unrecognized until he reached his peak. The Superstar may excel with forceps, a catheter, a scalpel or a stethoscope. The Superstar can't be explained and stands out amongst his peers as a franchise player. He may be an accomplished thoracic surgeon or a rural family practitioner. The Superstar creates highlight moves and techniques while performing the art of medicine. The Superstar will leave a legacy that should be watched and enjoyed. Because the Superstar doesn't come along that often.
In a few short weeks, a new hockey season begins and the pucks will again be dropped in arenas across North America. And although none of us will ever hoist that enormous trophy mug as did my Carolina Hurricanes, every day the hockey players in each of us will score victories in our own arenas, whether they be birthing suites, examining rooms, operating theaters or ICUs.
