At Martha Jefferson Hospital, the IVF Lab Director, Dr. Ted Thomas, removes a single cell from each six- to 10-cell embryo. The cells are then same-day shipped to our reference laboratory in New Jersey. Within 36 hours the reference lab contacts us to let us know which embryos have a genetic abnormality and which are normal. This allows transfer of only the normal embryos, thereby removing the risk of the genetic problem of concern. Although the sex of the embryos that have been biopsied is, or can be, determined during the genetic analysis, Reproductive Medicine and Surgery Center of Virginia, PLC, requests that the reference laboratory not relay the sex of the embryo to our staff, unless the genetic disease in question is sex-linked. Most other IVF centers utilize the same policy due to the ethical concerns of sex selection.
