Mother/Baby Room
Approximately two hours after birth, you and your baby will be moved to the Mother/Baby wing for postpartum recovery. These rooms are located in the Maternity Care Unit, so you are still close to the nursery and under the watchful eye of the maternity nurses. In fact, you will probably continue to have the same nurse that helped you give birth, because we believe in the importance of continuity of care. These rooms are almost always private, with a pullout sofa or second bed for your partner or other visitors.

Visitation Policy

Regular visiting hours are from 11am – 8pm. However, there are several exceptions. The mother’s significant other can stay 24 hours/day. We strongly encourage the significant other to remain with the mother at all times to provide comfort and support, so we have furnished each room with a second bed or pull out sofa. For grandparents, the first visit can be at any time, day or night. Absolutely, NO children under the age of 14 are allowed in the Maternity Care Center, except for the baby’s siblings. Newborn babies have very vulnerable immune systems, so we want to minimize the health risks that the baby comes in contact with.Rooming-In and Nursery

We tend to encourage rooming-in, because this time immediately after birth is a critical time for mother/baby bonding. However, we also offer Respite Nursery care. If you need a break or extra rest, the maternity nurses will gladly watch over your baby in the nursery until it is time for feeding. Once you are ready to room-in again, we will bring your baby right back to you.

Breastfeeding
More than 80% of new mothers at Martha Jefferson Hospital breastfeed their babies. Lactations Consultants are available to new mothers everyday from 8:30am – 5pm. Our Lactation Consultants also provide one-on-one outpatient lactation consults to assist you and your baby with successful breastfeeding after you’ve gone home. If you have questions or need assistance, call our Lactation Consultant line at (434) 982-8440.

For breastfeeding supplies, visit The Lactation Corner.

This boutique offers an array of items for breastfeeding moms and their babies, including breast pumps for rent or sale, breastfeeding bras, maternity clothes, baby clothes, books and more.

How Long Will I Stay?
After a vaginal birth, most women will stay with us for two days; and for a C-section, the average is three days. At the doctor’s discretion, some women leave sooner and some stay longer. If the baby has to stay longer at the hospital, the mother can usually rent a room from the hospital for a nominal rate to stay near her child. Usually the mother can actually stay in the Maternity Care Center, in an empty mother/baby room. If all maternity rooms are full, the mother can stay anywhere else in the hospital that there is an empty bed.

Discharge/Check-Out
Checkout time from Martha Jefferson Hospital is 10am on the day of discharge. On the morning of discharge, we offer a complimentary brunch to the mother and her significant other. At this time, you will also receive a New Parent Kit, which includes important information on caring for your baby, yourself, bonding, safety, and community resources for new parents. You will also have a final consultation to give instructions on proper care for the mother and to answer any questions before our valet service brings your car to you.
