The most important step you can take to prepare yourself for labor and delivery is taking childbirth preparation classes. In these classes, you will learn about different options for your childbirth plan, for example labor positions, natural pain relief methods, stress reduction techniques. By knowing more about the childbirth process, you will be able to make more informed decisions about your birthing process. For more information on childbirth and pregnancy classes available at Martha Jefferson, please visit our Maternity Education.

You need to discuss your childbirth plan with your delivering practitioner (family doctor, obstetrician, midwife) to make sure the childbirth experience is your experience. Several items you should discuss include:

  • Where you would like to give birth.
  • What type of monitor will be used on your baby (Doppler, fetoscope).
  • How you will manage your pain (narcotics, methods as learned in childbirth classes).
  • Birthing equipment you would like to use (birthing bed, tub, balls, etc.)
  • Techniques to be used if it is necessary to augment labor.
  • How to deal with common complications in labor and delivery.
  • Positions in which to deliver (lying on your side, squatting, etc.).

You may also want to discuss what you have learned in your childbirth preparation classes, vaginal versus caesarian childbirth, circumcision, any religious or cultural needs you may require, and any other concerns you may have.
