Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I need to have labs drawn, what do I need to know?
A. Patients should report to the MJH Outpatient Care Center (OCC) located at 595 Peter Jefferson Parkway, M—F from 0700—1730, for registration, specimen collection, or specimen drop off.

After hours or on weekends, any patients requiring outpatient laboratory services should report to the hospital concierge desk located at 500 Martha Jefferson Drive at Peter Jefferson Place (3rd floor main entrance). From there the patient will be directed by a member of the hospital staff to Patient Access and Laboratory services.

Q. I have a requisition for a Glucose Tolerance Test, what do I need to do?
A. Based on the test(s) ordered by the physician patients are encouraged to arrive for phlebotomy allowing an ample amount of time to have testing performed.

  • Fasting Blood Sugar (GLUF): The patient should be fasting at least 8 hours (overnight fast). Drinking water doesn't interfere with the test results.
  • 2 Hour Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT2): This test is used to test for diabetes mellitus. After at least an 8 hour fast, a fasting glucose is drawn. The patient is then given a 75 gram Glucose Tolerance Beverage. Two hours later the blood sample is obtained.
  • Glucose, 1 hour post 50 g Glucose (GL50): This test is ordered on pregnant women to test for gestational diabetes. The patient is given a 50 gram Glucose Tolerance Beverage. One hour later, the blood sample is obtained.
  • 3 Hour Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT3): This test is used to test pregnant women for gestational diabetes mellitus. After at least an 8 hour, fast a fasting glucose is drawn. The patient is then given a 100 gram Glucose Tolerance Beverage. Blood samples are then drawn at 1, 2, and 3 hours after the Glucose Tolerance Beverage ingested.
  • Additional Glucose Tolerance Tests for Males and non-pregnant Females: 3 Hour Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT3), 4 Hour Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT4), 5 Hour Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT5), the patient should be fasting at least 8 hours. A fasting glucose is drawn. The patient is given a 75 gram Glucose Tolerance Beverage. The patient is then drawn at each hour indicated by the test (i.e. 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 5 hours).

Q. I have orders for Glucose and Rhogam testing, what do I need to know?
A. Patients should report to the MJH Outpatient Care Center (OCC) located at 595 Peter Jefferson Parkway, where they will be registered for both Laboratory and Infusion Center encounters.

After registration they will report to the Outpatient Draw Station where they will be given a Glucose Tolerance Beverage to ingest.

  • If the Blood Bank does have a current ABO/Rh (prenatal record) on file for the patient:
    • One hour later, once the subsequent venipuncture has been performed for the Glucose and Rhogam, the patient will be directed to the MJH Infusion Center, located on the 3rd floor of the Phillips Cancer Center at the Main Hospital, with the Order to Transfuse in hand. There, the patient will have the Rhogam administered by an Infusion Center nurse.
  • If the Blood Bank does not have a current ABO/Rh (prenatal record) on file for the patient:
    • One hour later, after the venipuncture is performed for the Glucose testing, the patient will be directed to the MJH Infusion Center, located on the 3rd floor of the Phillips Cancer Center at the Main Hospital, with the Order to Transfuse in hand. There, an Infusion Center nurse will perform a venipuncture for the Rhogam workup; as well as administer the Rhogam once workup has been completed.

The Infusion Center serves patients between the hours 0800-1600 Monday-Friday. Patients are encouraged to arrive at the OCC prior to, but no later than 1500, allowing ample time for registration, administering of Glucola, and the required 1 hour interval for phlebotomy before 1600 when the Infusion Center closes for the day.

Any patients arriving outside of the aforementioned times have the option of coming back the following day or in case of an emergency be registered and seen by an Emergency Department physician in order to receive Rhogam administration.

Q. Where do I park and how much does it cost?
A. Outpatient Care Center—There is ample parking available close to the main entrance. Phillips Cancer Center—There is a parking area designated specifically for patients arriving for services at the Phillips Cancer Center. The parking area is located just to the right of the 3rd floor main entrance. There is no charge to park at any of Martha Jefferson's facilities.

Q. Where do I need to check-in?
A. Outpatient Care Center—You will be greeted by a friendly volunteer at the front door who will point you in the right direction. The registration and outpatient collection areas are located on the first floor of the building.

Q. Do I need to make an appointment?
A. Appointments are not necessary for general phlebotomy. Patients are seen on a first come first serve basis.
