Emergency Department

Life happens, and sometimes it throws you a curve ball. When it does, you need to think fast—think Martha Jefferson Emergency Department.

We know that in an emergency, you don’t want to fight traffic and parking any more than you have to. That’s why we have two convenient locations for emergency care, both in with our freestanding ED in Northern Albemarle and at our hospital-based ED at Pantops.

We understand that when you need medical attention, you should spend your time in the emergency room, not the waiting room. And that's why Martha Jefferson Hospital's award-winning Emergency Department has engineered its processes to bring you out of the waiting room and into the treatment area, where you will receive comprehensive care from our experienced emergency room staff within about 15 minutes.

How can we provide fast service without sacrificing quality care? Learn more about how our decreased wait times improve the level of care we provide.

Want to go behind the scenes of an emergency department? Kim Lowry RN, Emergency Room Nurse Manager at Martha Jefferson Hospital, answers your questions.

Have you ever wondered about how an ED nurse is trained? Check out our article in Martha Jefferson Magazine about our ED Nurse Internship Program or see our Healthwise video to observe some of our nurses in action.

Remember, in a life-threatening emergency, go to the nearest emergency department or call 9-1-1.
